You may experience a variety of emotions as you reflect on your family’s journey with cancer. Some caregivers feel sadness, anger, and confusion over “why” this happened to their family. Some caregivers feel guilty that their child’s cancer wasn’t caught sooner or wish it was them instead of their child. Some caregivers have additional fears about what life will be like for their child in years to come.
You might worry about your child’s late effects and grieve over “the loss of their childhood” or changes that you see in them. Many caregivers experience guilt and grief, so understand that you are not alone.
Guilt and grief are painful emotions. They can cause you to focus on the past and make it harder for you and your family to move forward on the road to recovery. Some parents say they feel more gratitude after this experience, or that this experience made them stronger and more empathetic. Gratitude can help with your grieving and the healing process!
In this session, we will cover:
• Understanding your emotions • Negative thoughts • Accepting and challenging thoughts • Gratitude
