While, at one point or another, cancer became the biggest thing in your life, we know it’s not the only thing in your life. People have other responsibilities and challenges before, during and after cancer. This often means that children may be being raised by or with the help of caregivers who are not biological parents, like grandparents, extended family members, adoptive parents, foster parents, or legal guardians.

All children need the same basic care, regardless of what they’ve been through or their relationship to those taking care of them. Just like your survivor may need a little extra “water” and “sunlight” to grow because of their cancer, they may need a little extra warmth, routine, and support because of other life experiences. The skills that you learn throughout the PLAY program will help your child, and your relationship with your child.

We have heard from other caregivers like you that you sometimes have a slightly different journey to navigate than biological parents. At times, it may feel like medical and education systems aren’t set up for families like yours. In this module, we will review:

  • Tips about communicating with other caregivers
  • Specific differences depending on your relationship to the child
  • Tips on how to promote your child’s adjustment with recent life changes
